Blanche has not felt anything since she was six years old and witness the death of her mother. She only knows what her father told her about that day, not recalling anything herself. Quiet and self-contained, she is oddly ruffled by Sir Rex. She knows she is defective in not being able to feel any real emotions, but the death of her father presents her with the unenviable postion of needing a husband.
Rex made it thru the war, but suffered greatly. Losing his leg, and the defection of his fiance to his friend and the man he risked his life for was traumatic enough. Knowing they are raising his son without him is beyond devastating. Dark and brooding, he is drawn to the laughter Blanche brings out in him.
Blanche wants to marry Rex, but the tragic recurrance of flashbacks to her mother's murder makes her believe she is going mad. Better to leave Rex to find a better wife, than to have him hate her for tying him to her madness.
A very dark story, but also very compelling to watch as they each face their demons and learn to love.
