Benjamin Sinclair has just found out he has a fifteen year-old son that someone had neglected to tell him about. Kelly had disappeared, leaving her younger sister, Emma Jean Sands, to raise his son, Michael, on her own. He knew that he would not be welcome in the area with the locals believing he had killed Kelly and Emma's father, but he was going to meet his son and make them pay for keeping him a secret.
When Ben shows up at the camp Emma runs to support Michael, he has already had a run-in with the locals, getting himself injured. Finding out his son is wise beyond his years, and taking risks he wants to throttle Emma. He also finds himself drawn in by the strength of character she shows, and the love she has given his son.
As Emma, Ben, and Mikey work to get to know each other better, they are up against a series of events that puts them all in danger. As each crisis arises, Emma finds she can lean on Ben, and he works to keep her safe.
A very fast-paced and exciting story. The biggest issue I had was when Galen was beating Emma up and Ben really did not do anything. They didn't call in the sheriff, and he didn't beat the ever-lovin tar out of him when next they met. Plus, it seemed like her bruises went away extremely quick to not be noticed at the dance.
