Julia has been betrothed practically since birth. Her first meeting with her husband-to-be was when she was five, but it went horribly wrong, as did every meeting they had until Richard disappearred from England. Wanting him to like her, his animosity wounded her, and since she was just a child, she struck out drawing blood nearly every time.
Richard's father was a very cruel man, and he wanted nothing to do with making his father richer by marrying Julia for her money. The anger he felt for the man and the position he was in transferred to the girl he was to marry, making Richard seem angry and cruel to her. Leaving the country, he hoped the contracted betrothal would diappear, but his return to view again the woman he loved, the very happily married Georgina, broght him unknowingly back in to contact with Julia.
Fortunately for Richard and Julia, the lines of hate they felt for each other as children, grew in to lines of love as adults and they worked their way past the pains of the past, building a future together.
A good story.
